A Journey Inside the Micro-world | Wim van Egmond | TEDxGateway

Wim van Egmond takes the audience with him on a guided tour past some of the most wonderful characters you can find in the micro-world. He combines spectacular and funny movies with interesting facts. He primarily works as an independent artist but since his work brings together both art and science his images are often used as scientific illustrations. For many years he collaborated in the development of the unique museum for microbes, Micropia in Amsterdam for which he helped making content, images, films and a visitor friendly microscope. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Video here

Victorian-era microscope slides

In August 2016, the San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT) opened the Eleanor and Jerome Navarra Special Collections Gallery, a new permanent space dedicated to showcasing the holdings of its research library and rare book room. The core exhibition of the new space, “Extraordinary Ideas from Ordinary People: A History of Citizen Science,” uses library collections to highlight the role of amateur naturalists in the history of science. One of the displays features a selection of Victorian-era microscope slides. Amidst a craze for popular science in the late 19th century, microscopes became commercially available. Suddenly, anyone who could afford a microscope could be a citizen scientist, mounting specimens to glass slides or buying pre-made slides displaying everything imaginable—tiny pieces of plants, shells, insects, fossils, crystals. Charles and Ray Eames - Powers of Ten™ (1977)

Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell. POWERS OF TEN © 1977 EAMES OFFICE LLC. View video here
